Proposal for a Queueing System for Public EV Chargers

EV Charger Queue

As electric vehicle (EV) adoption accelerates, the demand for public charging infrastructure is growing rapidly. However, a common issue faced by EV drivers is arriving at a charging station only to find all chargers occupied. This can lead to congestion, frustration, and inefficient use of charging infrastructure. To address this, we propose an innovative queueing system integrated into existing EV charging apps, allowing for a more organized and user-friendly charging experience.

How the Queueing System Works

Joining the Queue

  1. When a driver arrives at a charging station and finds all chargers in use, they can join a digital queue via the charging provider’s app or directly through the charger’s interface.
  2. To prevent misuse, only drivers within a 1-mile radius of the station or physically near the chargers will be able to join the queue. This ensures that the next user is close enough to promptly occupy a newly available charger, minimizing downtime.

Queue Management

  1. Drivers will be required to input their vehicle’s license plate number or register their vehicle details when joining the queue.
  2. The app will maintain a real-time queue, notifying drivers of their position and estimated waiting time.
  3. A visible queue display board at the charging station, similar to airport flight information screens, will show:
    • The order of vehicles in the queue
    • The next vehicle authorized to take an available charger
    • Instructions for new users on how to join and use the queue system

Vehicle Availability and Parking

  1. Drivers waiting for a charging spot can park in non-EV bays within the vicinity, reducing congestion and preventing queues from obstructing the main car park.
  2. Once notified that a charger is available, the next driver in line has a 5-minute window to relocate their vehicle to the charging bay.
  3. Failure to occupy the bay within the allotted time will result in the next driver being notified, and the missed opportunity user will be re-queued or removed depending on station policy.

System Independence and Value Addition

Independent Queueing System

The proposed queueing system could be developed independently of the chargers, functioning as a standalone application. While this approach would provide flexibility and broader compatibility with various charging networks, enforcing the queue would be more challenging without direct integration with the charging hardware.

Advertising and Booking Potential

Promoting such a queueing system could add significant value to the overall charging experience. Developing the system further into a booking platform would enable drivers to reserve charging slots in advance, potentially at a premium cost. This added feature could:

    • Enhance user convenience and reduce uncertainty.
    • Generate additional revenue streams for charging providers.
    • Make associated services, such as the café and other nearby facilities, more attractive to EV drivers who could comfortably use them while waiting for their turn.

Ensuring Fairness and Efficiency

License Plate Verification

To prevent queue-jumping, the system will utilize license plate recognition technology. The charging station will scan and verify the plate of the vehicle occupying the charger against the next authorized vehicle in the queue.

Clear Signage and Instructions

Prominent signage at the station will explain:

    • The purpose and operation of the queueing system
    • How to join the queue via the app or charger interface
    • Rules for timely movement of vehicles once notified

Remote Notifications and Flexibility

  1. The app will send real-time notifications when it’s a user’s turn, ensuring drivers can enjoy nearby facilities like cafes without fear of missing their slot.
  2. An additional display in the services’ café will mirror the queue information, allowing drivers to monitor the queue without being physically present at the chargers.

Benefits of the Proposed System

  1. Reduced Downtime: Quick turnover of charging bays with minimal delays.
  2. Improved User Experience: A fair, transparent queue that reduces frustration and confusion.
  3. Optimized Space Utilization: Prevents unnecessary congestion around charging bays.
  4. Scalability: The system can be adapted for various public charging locations, from motorway service stations to urban charging hubs.
  5. Increased Revenue Opportunities: The option to transform the queueing system into a booking platform introduces new monetization possibilities and enhances the attractiveness of nearby services.

Conclusion

Implementing a structured queueing system for public EV chargers will enhance the efficiency, fairness, and user satisfaction of public charging networks. By leveraging existing charging apps and simple on-site technology, this solution offers a scalable approach to addressing one of the most common pain points for EV drivers today.

Moreover, by offering the possibility of an independent system and evolving it into a booking platform, charging providers can generate additional revenue and make associated services more appealing. This proposal provides a practical framework that charging providers can adopt, helping pave the way for a seamless and sustainable EV charging experience.
