NetZero by 2050: We Can’t Afford Not To Try

NetZero by 2050 We can't afford not to try

As the noise of NetZero scepticism grows louder, not denying climate change, but questioning whether aiming for NetZero by 2050 is even possible, we need to take a collective breath and ask: what’s the alternative? Yes, reaching NetZero is hard. Yes, it’s expensive. Yes, we are behind. But doing nothing will cost us far more, economically, socially, and environmentally.

The argument often goes: “We’ll never hit NetZero by 2050, so why even try?” Or: “It’s too expensive; we’ve got more immediate problems to solve.” But this mindset misses the point entirely.

The Cost of Inaction Is Higher Than the Cost of Action

Every fraction of a degree of warming brings greater disruption:

  • Floods that destroy homes, businesses, and infrastructure.
  • Droughts that cripple food systems and economies.
  • Extreme weather that leaves communities reeling and insurers retreating.
  • Migration and conflict driven by environmental collapse.

These aren’t future threats, they’re now events. And they’re expensive.

When critics say decarbonisation is unaffordable, what they really mean is we haven’t budgeted properly for the true cost of climate impacts.

Yes, It’s Difficult. But That’s Not a Reason to Quit.

No serious person in the climate and energy world thinks NetZero by 2050 is easy. It’s a monumental task. It means changing how we power, heat, build, travel, farm, and manufacture, at speed and scale. But difficulty is not an excuse for defeatism.

We didn’t build sewage systems, national healthcare, digital infrastructure, or the modern electricity grid because they were easy or cheap. We built them because society needed them.
The same is true for NetZero.

We Must Cut Emissions and Prepare for a Hotter World

The brutal reality is: some warming is already locked in. So alongside cutting emissions as fast as we can, we also need to invest in adaptation, stronger infrastructure, better flood defences, drought, resilient crops, and public health systems ready for climate stress.

This isn’t either/or. It’s both. The longer we delay, the harder adaptation becomes, and the more expensive mitigation will be. We are not choosing between a green utopia and the status quo. We are choosing between action and accelerated disruption.

The Future Is Watching

Perhaps the most sobering thought is this: we are not just making choices for ourselves. Future generations will judge us by what we do in the next few years.

They will ask:

  • Did we act when the science was clear on climate change?
  • Did we change course when we had the chance to achieve NetZero?
  • Did we rise to the challenge, or retreat behind excuses?

The truth is: we’ve already wasted decades. We cannot afford to waste another one. Every tonne of carbon avoided now is a down payment on a more stable future.

Progress Is Happening, Let’s Not Squander It

Despite the scepticism, real progress is being made:

  • Clean energy is now the cheapest energy in most parts of the world.
  • Electric vehicles are scaling fast.
  • Businesses are embedding sustainability into core strategy, not just PR.
  • Consumers are more informed and engaged than ever.

We need to build on this momentum, not dismantle it.

NetZero Is Not a Guarantee, But It’s Our Best Option

We may not hit NetZero by 2050 exactly. But that’s not a reason to stop trying. It’s a reason to try harder. Because the closer we get, the more damage we avoid. Because the more we invest in solutions now, the more resilient our economies and communities will be.

And because doing nothing is not neutral, it’s choosing a more dangerous path by default. We don’t get to vote on physics. But we do get to choose how we respond.

Let’s choose courage. Let’s choose responsibility. Let’s choose to keep aiming for NetZero, because we can’t afford not to.
