A momentary flicker across Iberia, seems started in Spain and reacted in Portugal, reminds us: as climate shifts and renewables rise, our electricity grids must evolve too.
Here’s a short ode to the growing challenge.
Ode to the Iberia Flicker
O land of sun, of wind-swept plain,
Where light and breeze now bear the strain,
Your circuits sighed, your wires grew slack,
As summer’s heat bent conductors back.
A trembling hum, a faltering beat.
The sacred pulse beneath our feet,
Wavered where it once stood tall,
And darkness dared to brush the wall.
No storm, no war, no hand of man,
But fickle weather spoiled the plan.
For grids once firm with coal and gas
Now dance with blades that spin and pass.
O mighty engines, forged of old,
Rotating arms of iron and gold,
You anchored time, you steadied flow,
Now ghostly winds blow fast and slow.
When heat and air conspire to twist,
And currents sag within the mist,
Then grids must fight with every thread
To hold the line ‘twixt light and dread.
For climate calls with stranger songs,
And what was right now may be wrong.
Our networks, proud, must learn to sway,
To bend with sun, with storm, with day.
Yet let us not in anger rail
At solar beams or midnight gale.
But build anew with wiser schemes,
To match the madness of our dreams.
O Iberia, you blinked, you woke,
A warning carried in the smoke:
To hold the charge, to keep the light,
We must rebuild for future’s fight.
