The Carbon Footprint of the Virtual World: Search vs. AI and Beyond

Virtual Carbon Footprint

When we think about carbon footprints, our minds often go straight to planes, cars, or factories. Yet the invisible digital world—our searches, cloud storage, AI queries, and collaborative tools—also carries a real and growing environmental impact.

.

Search vs. AI: Not All Queries Are Equal

A simple internet search is remarkably efficient. Estimates suggest that a single Google search produces around 0.2 grams of CO₂e—roughly the same as switching on an LED light for a few seconds.

By contrast, an AI query, like asking ChatGPT or another large language model for an answer, is far more energy intensive. Current estimates suggest that an AI request can produce 4–10 times the emissions of a traditional search, depending on the complexity of the question and the size of the model. That’s because instead of scanning an index of web pages, AI queries run through billions of parameters across powerful data centre servers.

For the end user, the difference feels invisible—the answer simply appears on screen. But in the background, one request is sipping energy, while the other is guzzling it.

.

The Hidden Impact of Cloud Software

While AI queries grab headlines, much of the carbon footprint of the digital economy comes from the tools we use every day at work:

  • Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and Slack – A one-hour video call for a small group emits about 150–250 grams of CO₂e per participant, equivalent to driving a petrol car about a kilometre.

  • SharePoint, OneDrive, Google Drive – Cloud storage itself is relatively efficient, but constant syncing, background processes, and duplicate files amplify the footprint. Storing 1 GB of data for a year can produce 2–5 kg of CO₂e. Multiply that across millions of users and the numbers quickly scale.

  • Accounting and ERP systems – Continuous-use online applications are always running in the background, pinging servers and updating data. The individual footprint of one user may be modest, but at scale, these platforms can rival mid-sized industries in electricity demand.

.

The Relative Scale

To put this into perspective:

  • 1 AI query ≈ 10 Google searches

  • 1 hour of video call ≈ 1,000 AI queries

  • 1 year of storing 1 GB in the cloud ≈ 10,000 AI queries

In other words, while AI feels “big” in the headlines, it’s the continuous, everyday use of digital platforms—our endless video calls, always-on file syncing, and terabytes of stored data—that creates the largest share of the carbon load in the virtual world.

.

Why This Matters

Globally, data centres already consume about 2–3% of total electricity, a figure projected to climb as AI, streaming, and cloud services expand. If left unchecked, digital carbon footprints could rival aviation emissions within the next decade.

But there’s good news: data centre operators are rapidly moving toward renewable energy, and businesses can reduce their impact through better practices:

  • Turn off video during large online meetings unless necessary.

  • Clean up old files and reduce duplicate storage.

  • Be mindful of when an AI query is helpful versus when a quick search will do.

  • Ask software providers about their renewable energy commitments.

.

A Virtual Responsibility

The digital world may feel weightless, but it has a footprint as real as any factory. Understanding the relative impact of our online behaviours—search vs. AI, storage vs. streaming—helps businesses and individuals make smarter choices.

Every click, query, and call leaves a trace. The challenge is to ensure that the convenience of our connected lives doesn’t come at an unseen cost to the climate.
