Farewell to the Chimneys
Saw a scaffolded chimney today
once the heart of the home,
drawing coal smoke, soot, and stories
up through brick and winter air.
Now it stands as a relic of an extinct technology,
its flues long cold,
its purpose retired except to hold two semis together.
Gas came after—cleaner, quicker
and its time, too, is passing
as we move toward a net zero future.
The chimney remains,
a quiet monument to how we once heated our lives,
and how every generation
builds the next chapter of our energy journey.
